Ann
Albrizio, Osnat Lustig, Classical Millinery
Techniques: a Complete Guide to Making and Designing Today's Hats,
Lark Books, 1997.
Professor Ann Albrizio started the Millinery Program at the Fashion
Institute in New York. This book is a labor of her love and commitment
to millinery and to her students. Professor Albrizio's technique is
tactile and intuitive..."trust your eye". The book is an
invaluable source for learning about classical millinery technqiues,
which are otherwise difficult to learn. If you want to go to FIT to
learn the art of millinery, but can't get there, this book is the
next best thing.
Mildred Anlezark, Hats
on Heads, The Art of Creative Millinery, Kangaroo Press, 1990.
A complete presentation of basic millinery technqiues, with detailed
instructions. Techniques for making crowns and brims are analytic/geometric
(contrast with technique ofAlbrizio, above).
Juliet Bawden,
The Hat Book, Creating Hats for Every Occasion, Lark Books,
1993.
Buy The Hat Book from Amazon. This book claims to be about hats for
"every occassion" - and it is. It has all sorts of hats
and techniques, and can be helpful.
Dilys Blum,
Ahead of Fashion: Hats of the 20th Century, Bulletin of the
Philadelphia Museum of Art, volume 89, 1993. This is a catalog from
an exhibition in Philadelphia, and is a great source for historical
hats. Excellent pictures of great hats. But - alas - it was published
as an exhibition catalog, and is not available now.
Adele Campione, Women's
Hats, Il Capello da Donna, Chronicle Books, 1989.
This little book is an inspiration for any hat designer...or anyone
who appreciates style. It has lots of pictures of beautiful couture
hats from Europe, from the great age of hats - 1880 to 1969.
Denise Dreher,
From the Neck Up, An Illustrated Guide to Hatmaking, Madhatter
Press, 1981.
For quite a few years this has been a standard book on techniques
for millinery. It is careful and detailed, and is a must for costume
and theater designers.
Madeleine
Ginsburg, The Hat, Trends and Traditions, Barrons, 1990.
Out-of-print.
Curator's view of hats, well-researched, with lots of historical
pictures.
Colin McDowell,
Hats, Status, Style and Glamour, Rizzoli, 1992.
Complete history of hats, with great pictures. Makes connections
between historical hats and comtemporary couture hats.
Maureen Reilly
and Mary Beth Detrich, Women's Hats of the 20th Century, Schiffer,
1997.
Published for hat collectors - lots of pitures (with prices). If you
like looking at hats, this is a feast.
Rodney Smith
and Leslie Smolan, The Hat Book, Doubleday, 1993.
Out of print.
This little book is a celebration of hats, with a strong USA emphasis.
While it would be interesting to hat designers and hat enthusiasts,
it doesn't have the depth of Colin McDowell, or the inspiring hats
of Adele Campione.
Jeffrey
B. Snyder, Stetson Hats and the John B. Stetson Company, 1865-1970,
Schiffer, 1997.
Most of us think of Stetson as a man's hat, but this book shows more:
a full picture of industrial hat making in the age of hats...men's
and women's. It has engrossing pictures and details about the process
of making felt, and other aspects of hat making.
